Jim Eshkawkogan

Jim Eshkawkogan, a member of the Wiikwemkoong Unceded Indian Territory. Current role, Manager of Indigenous Services with the Sudbury Better Beginnings Better Futures Association. Jim began working with Better Beginnings Better Futures in 1991 as a Community Developer with the responsibilities of identifying and addressing the needs of the local urban Aboriginal community.

The motivating themes of Jim’s work and daily life are that:

– All people need opportunities to participate and contribute to their community,

– The teachings of the Medicine Wheel are “human teachings”,

– When helping others in need, treat them with “humble respect”.

Some past Community Partnership activities:

– Establishing Native Language Programs in the local grade schools in the neighbourhood.

– Reviving local cultural celebrations & events ie: National Aboriginal Day, All Souls Day and seasonal Feasts,

– He is a founding member of:
o Gezhtoojig Employment & Training
o Shkagamik-Kwe Native Health Centre
o Aboriginal Community/Police Advisory Committee
o MKWA Police & Aboriginal Youth Mentoring Program
o The Mayors Round Table on Diversity

Over the years, participated/volunteered on a number of local agency Board of Directors & agency committees.
Jim often supports the local community’s families, individuals & agencies as a Cultural Advisor.
